Winter Rodent Prevention Checklist for Dubai Homes & Villas

Winter is peak rat season in Dubai. This practical checklist walks through sealing drains, gaps, rooflines and bins, so you keep rats and mice out before the season peaks.

Winter Rodent Prevention Checklist for Dubai Homes & Villas

Winter is the busiest rat season in Dubai. The cooler nights from around November to February push rats indoors for warmth, and the rains flood the drains and burrows, driving them up into homes. The good news is that most of it is preventable, and the best time to act is before the season peaks, not after a rat is already in the kitchen. Here is a practical checklist you can work through, room by room and outside, to keep rats and mice out this winter.

Start outside: the garden and perimeter

Winter rats mostly come from outside, so the perimeter is where prevention starts.

  • Clear away clutter, woodpiles and dense planting against the walls, which give rats cover to burrow.
  • Keep bins closed and off the ground, and clean up food and pet-food spills around bin areas.
  • Walk the boundary walls and landscaping looking for fresh burrows, which are smooth holes around the width of a golf ball.
  • Cut back any tree branches or cables that touch the roof, since roof rats use them as bridges.

The drains: the big winter one

This is the step most people skip, and in winter it is the most important. So many rain-season rats come up through flooded drainage that guarding the drains makes the biggest difference.

  • Fit covers or rat guards to floor drains and gullies, especially on the ground floor and in bathrooms.
  • Have any cracked or open drain and pipe penetrations sealed before the rains.
  • Check manhole covers sit flush and are not broken.

Our post on rats and the rainy season explains why this matters so much.

Sealing a gap around pipework to keep rodents out of a Dubai home in winter
Sealing the gaps now, before the season peaks, is the single best way to keep winter rats out.

Seal the gaps rodents use

Rats need a gap the size of a 2 dirham coin, and mice need only the width of a pencil, so small openings matter.

  • Fit or replace brush strips on external and kitchen doors.
  • Pack gaps around pipes, cables and AC penetrations with steel wool and seal over them, because rodents chew straight through foam alone.
  • Cover wall vents and air bricks with fine metal mesh.
  • At the roofline, seal gaps where cables, pipes and the fascia meet the wall, the routes roof rats climb.

Inside: the kitchen and store rooms

Making the inside less rewarding helps too, especially for mice.

  • Store dry food in sealed containers rather than open packets.
  • Keep under-sink cupboards tidy and check the gap around the pipework there, the most common indoor entry point.
  • Clear crumbs and food from behind the fridge, cooker and washing machine.
  • Do not leave pet food down overnight.

Know the early signs

Prevention also means catching it early. Through winter, keep an eye out for droppings in cupboards, scratching in the ceiling that started as it got cooler, gnaw marks on packaging, and a musky smell. Our guide on the signs of an infestation has the full list. Spotting it early makes treatment faster and cheaper.

When to call for help

Some of this you can do yourself. The drain guarding and the harder-to-reach roofline and pipe sealing are usually better done properly, and if you already have activity, sealing the house with rats inside just traps them in. That is where a professional comes in: we inspect, clear what is there, and seal the drains, roofline and gaps as one job. It is the heart of our rodent proofing and winter rodent control. Message us on WhatsApp for a free inspection before the season peaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I keep rats out of my house in winter in Dubai?

Guard the drains and gullies, seal gaps around pipes, doors and the roofline, keep bins closed and the garden clear, and store food sealed. The drains are the big one in winter, because that is how most rain-season rats get in.

When should I rodent-proof for winter?

Before the season peaks, ideally in late autumn before the first heavy rains, so the drains and gaps are sealed before rats start looking for a way in.

What is the most important winter prevention step?

Guarding the floor drains and gullies, especially on the ground floor. So many winter rats come up through flooded drainage that this single step makes the biggest difference.

Can you do the proofing for me?

Yes. We inspect, clear any existing activity, and seal the drains, roofline and gaps as one job, backed by a guarantee and a certificate.
